The oatmeal shampoo. Then the medicated one.
Topical. It calms the surface for a day or two, then washes off — and every bath strips a little more of the oil the skin was trying to keep.

Why it didn’t stickOmega-3s start oxidizing the day the bottle is opened, and oxidized oil does nothing for skin. Oil alone also brings nothing to build hair with. Most bottles are in the back of the fridge by week three.

Changing kibble helps when the food was the problem. Usually it wasn’t. An antihistamine can quiet an evening of scratching; it doesn’t change the skin the scratching comes from.
Why it didn’t stickThe omega-3 in most dry food is flax ALA, which dogs convert to the useful EPA and DHA at only a few percent — after it has spent months going stale in the bag.
None of these put the raw materials back. That’s the part everyone skips — so here it is.
The hidden cause
Itchy skin and a dull coat are usually the same shortage, seen twice.
A dog’s skin has a thin outer layer that works like mortar between bricks — a layer of fats that holds water in and keeps irritants out. That mortar is built from specific fats the body can’t make on its own: the omega-3s EPA and DHA, and the omega-6 linoleic acid. Skin also replaces itself roughly every three weeks, and every one of those new cells needs zinc to be made properly.
When those raw materials run short, the mortar gets thin. Water leaves, irritants get in, the skin dries and flakes, and the dog scratches. Scratching damages the barrier further, and the loop runs — often for months, because nothing about it looks urgent.
The coat shows it at the same time, for the same reason. Hair is keratin, built in the follicle from biotin and zinc, and its shine is oil from the skin underneath. A body that’s short on those materials spends what it has on organs first. The coat is last in line — which is why a dull, shedding coat is so often the first thing you notice.
Fleas, mites, a true food allergy, an infection — those have their own causes, and no chew fixes them. If the skin is broken or the itching is constant, that’s a vet visit first. Everything on this page is about the nutritional side.
How it actually works

Nothing here is exotic. It’s the same handful of nutrients, in the amounts printed on the label, given every day until the skin and the coat have had time to turn over. Amounts below are per two chews, the serving for an 11–30 lb dog.
Salmon oil EPA and DHA → the barrier EPA 81 mg · DHA 58 mg
Norwegian salmon oil powder (500 mg) and wild Alaskan salmon oil (300 mg) supply the two omega-3s that get built into skin cell membranes and into that outer mortar. Dogs can’t make them, and flax doesn’t reliably become them. They have to arrive as EPA and DHA — and they have to be fresh.
Omega-6 → the shine 250 mg
Linoleic acid is what the skin turns into the oil that coats each hair. Too little and the coat looks dry no matter how much you brush.
Zinc → the turnover 5 mg zinc glycinate
Skin replaces itself in about three weeks, and every new cell needs zinc. Glycinate is the well-absorbed form. Short on zinc, new skin comes in flaky and the follicle works badly.
Biotin → the hair itself 0.5 mg
Keratin is what hair is made of; biotin is a building block for making it. New hair has to grow in before you can see the difference — that is the part that takes weeks, not days.
Vitamin E → keeps the oil useful 13.34 mg
Omega-3s oxidize easily. Vitamin E protects them in the jar and in the body, so the salmon oil you paid for is still salmon oil at chew 140 — the thing a pump bottle can’t promise.
